Bits & Atom

Recently came across a fascinating perspective from Jeff Currie, Chief Strategy Officer at Energy Pathways , that beautifully captures the rhythm of global markets. He describes the world economy as a pendulum—constantly swinging between “Bits” and “Atoms.” Bits represent the world of technology—asset-light, scalable, intangible. Software, platforms, algorithms, AI. Atoms represent the physical world—energy, commodities, infrastructure—asset-heavy, capital-intensive, tangible. History shows a pattern. Whenever enthusiasm and capital crowd into Bits , the forgotten Atoms quietly begin to outperform. And when commodities and energy dominate the narrative, technology patiently prepares for its next surge. The pendulum never stays still. But today feels different. For the first time, Bits and Atoms are no longer opposing forces. They are converging. The AI revolution—arguably the purest expression of “Bits”—is now driving unprecedented demand for power, grids, data centres, and p...

US Economy: Hard landing, Soft Landing or NO landing. Is Good News the Bad News.

Year 2023 started very strong for US equity market but does this rally has legs to continue. Pondering on the same question happy yto share observations on US economy and markets which you may find value. Current Narrative: At present equity market narrative is dominated by better-than-expected economic data of Europe, China Re-Opening and Immaculate Disinflation in US. Elaborating further equity markets are expecting a scenario where Inflation in US comes down along with growth, but without breaking system or at least economy will not go in deep recession. This will help FED to pivot an allow interest rate to come down and risk assets will do well in this scenario. This trade started in October creating rebound in US equities and drawing more and more participants into it. There are few data points and observation which are in contrast with current narrative. Observations Growth Sales growth remained strong at 11% in Q3 and remained firmly above trend line indicati...

US Market : Who is right - Equity or Bond ?

[ 9th Feb 2023 ] US economy is poised at interesting cross-roads. While inflation is coming down growth data is holding up. FED has been less hawkish on one day and more than less hawkish on another. And perhaps most of the economist are at best can be described as “Cautiously Pessimistic”. As they say if US goes into recession this year it will be most pre-announced recession in recent times. With this pretext how various factors are stacking up: Fundamental Data US data holding strong, deterioration in cyclical data. Europe and China data picking up. Most Imbalanced Labor market condition. Still Quarterly County Survey holding strong for labor market. There are 54 lacs employees who have left labor market. In line with inflation wage growth has soften a bit to 4.4%. ISM Non-Manufacturing surprise on upside. Number jumped from 43 to 60. Number greater than 50 is expansion in activity. Monetary Cycle Fed may pause b...

To Lock or Not to Lock (Down)

Very Interesting Statistic from US : 60% of jobs that pay more than $100,000 a year can be done from home, but only 10% of jobs paying $40,000 or less per year can be done remotely. The issue of inequality will have to be addressed for any country to move forward as a democracy . This statistic must be much more acute in case of India, Hence   with rising cases clamour for lockdown is increasing, but our experience of last march-april has taught us that any such activity is catastrophic for low earning group of people. Government has to choose between two undesirable options and none will be acceptable.   [ps. No comments on Election rallies and Kumbh Mela ]

Maxim from "Skin in the Game" from Nassim N Taleb

One of the gem written by Nassim N  Taleb “Skin in the Game” , he finishes book with a brilliant maxims, via negativa style.  [ via negativa is subtractive epistemology, which means removing what we think is wrong. Core idea is we know a lot more what is wrong than what is right.] Here are the select Maxims (via negativa style) :  NO friendship without trust, opinion without consequence, change without aesthetics, food without nourishment,  love without sacrifice,  facts without rigor,  mathematics without proof,  politeness without warmth,  values without embodiment,  virtue without risk,  probability without ergodicity,  complication without depth,  fluency without content,  decision without asymmetry,  science without skepticism,  religion without tolerance,  and,  most of all: nothing without skin in the game. On a personal note, for an professional biggest Skin In The Game is "REPUTATION" and one...
